Beaches and coastlines are one of the most litter-prone areas across the world, with over 80% of this litter then entering our oceans. Millions of pieces of litter are found on beaches each year, with the highest levels of abandoned waste found during the summer season. So how do we help tackle beach litter?
As the visitor levels increase on beaches, as do the waste levels. Some of the most frequently littered items include cigarette butts, food packaging, rope, and fishing wires, drink bottles and cans and beach toys, all left behind by tourists. This litter is not only unsightly, and leaves the area looking unappealing, but it is also highly dangerous to wildlife, including sealife and seabirds and the environment as a whole.
Whilst there are many reasons littering happens, lack of bins, or perhaps the bins are too full – the main reason is simply poor waste management, as the vast majority of waste littered is done so purposefully. One way this can be tackled is through the means of anti-litter promotion in coastal areas – which will aim to help raise awareness of the problem, with the end goal of seeing a reduction in beach litter.
