Collecting Christmas waste in Hospitality

During Christmas, we all like to ‘Eat Drink, and be Merry’, as the old saying goes. There will be many of us uttering the phrase ‘the diet starts in January’, and overall just taking full advantage of the delectable Christmas treats on offer. Whilst many of us prepare for the Christmas season, we choose to celebrate by treating ourselves to a meal out – whether this is at a work Christmas party, catching up with old friends, or even just enjoying a meal with your nearest and dearest.

The festive period is one of the busiest times of year for those in hospitality, across the entire sector of pubs, bars, restaurants, and hotels. Celebrations run from mid-November all the way through into January, and of course, the weeks before and after Christmas are the most popular. Whilst this time of year can be beneficial for the hospitality sector, it can also be stressful and an influx of waste is unavoidable.

It’s the most wasteful time of the year:

The spike in hospitality influences the levels of waste, and statistics show that in the UK alone, we create around 30% more waste during the festive period. This rubbish can be anything from excess food waste, to dry mixed recycling, in particular bottles from alcoholic beverages, alongside the packaging with which all the stock comes in. Of course, as this time of year is set to be busier, hospitality establishments will more than likely need greater levels of supplies – this in turn will result in larger levels of waste.

Whilst the business owners think ahead to stock up on their food and drink for Christmas, it is important that thought is also put into the waste management side, this means having a well-stocked supply of bags and liners to capture waste. Like a parent on Christmas day, the black bin bag has never been more important in the hospitality sector. With more waste, comes the need for more liners to capture, collect and contain.

Have a good stock of Santa sacks!

So which sacks and bags are good to have a supply of? Well, of course, your black refuse sacks or wheelie liner are a given. They are ideal for general waste and that which cannot be recycled. Next up you need to find a solution for the increase in food waste. With more Christmas parties and family gatherings, many will choose to dine out and indulge in the delicious delights on offer, however leftovers need to be captured. For food waste, the ideal solution is compostable liners – but why are these liners preferred? Research has identified compostable liners as the preferred and recommended choice for the capture and containment of food waste. The research concludes that compostable liners provide the most effective balance of reasonable costs, minimisation of plastic contaminants in the biodegradable waste stream and maximisation of total food waste collected and processed. What about recycling? You will almost certainly see an influx in beverage recycling, as we enjoy a Christmas tipple (or 2). Natural or clear sacks are ideal for recycled waste, as you can easily identify contamination from non-recyclable waste. It is also always better to use liners in your bins to enhance hygiene, and prevent spills and smells.
