Each September, teams of volunteers from across the UK assemble to take part in the GB Beach Clean. Organised by the Marine Conservation Society, the Beach Clean is held at the end of Summer each year, and for 2022, it will run between 16th – 25th of September. We will be joining the thousands up and down the country who will be heading to the UK’s sandy shores to help clean up litter from our beaches.
Volunteers can choose any beach to help tackle litter, and the Marine Conservation Society asks people to collect data on which items have been captured along the way. The purpose of tallying up the waste collected will help with research into prevention.
Over the years since the introduction of the GB Beach Clean, not only have we seen cleaner coastlines but collecting this litter, helps prevents the waste from entering our oceans. The beach cleans have become invaluable to our planet, seeing results such as a 55% drop in plastic bags found on our beaches and a reduction in litter levels year on year. Any litter pick, large or small, will have a positive impact on our environment, and in the case of the GB Beach Clean, our coastlines and oceans.
As we have done for many years previously, Cromwell will be joining the cleanup, as an organised team heads to the East coast on September 23rd to carry out a litter pick. Filey in North Yorkshire is our chosen destination, this area always seems to be a hot spot of littered waste, due to its popular nearby attractions and holiday accommodation. We have tackled this area for many years now, with fluctuating levels of waste collected. This year we are hoping for a decrease in the levels of waste collected, which will hopefully mean people are becoming more responsible when handling waste. Whilst the area does have good levels of bins, litter still be a common issue – which we hope to tackle on the Friday afternoon.
Not only will we be carrying out our own pick for the GB Beach Clean, but we can also help others with theirs by supplying our highly resource-efficient litter picking bags.
