Council Food Waste Collection Trials are on the rise!

Cromwell has worked closely with Local Authorities for almost 4 decades now, supplying refuse sacks, bin liners, and compactor sacks to support their waste strategy and help residents capture waste and recycling. More recently, compostable liners have seen a rise in popularity over the past few years. These liners are ideal for capturing and enclosing food, garden, and other organic waste.

Food waste collections…

Over the past few years, many councils have adapted their waste strategy by introducing separate food waste collections to their residents. The Welsh Government seems to be leading the way with this type of service, however other local authorities across the UK are quickly catching up and introducing their own food waste collections. This new collection typically sees residents being given a small bin (caddies) to place any excess food waste.

How do compostable liners contribute to a sustainable food waste management strategy?

• Compostable liners increase residential participation rates, by enabling households to capture and contain food waste with minimal mess and odours. Increased participation rates can facilitate an increase in the amount of unavoidable food waste available to be treated through composting or anaerobic digestion.

• Compostable liners also capture and contain food waste with minimal contamination, enabling the waste to then be broken down into quality fertilizer.

• Compostable liners with reorder ribbons help maximise food waste captured with minimal liner wastage because of improved visibility of liner demand and available stock.

Supply & demand…

Cromwell has a range of compostable liners ranging from 5L to 240L. These liners are manufactured from Ecopond® biodegradable plastic, using starch and lactide-based derivatives of plant sources, these products are fully compliant with the European composting standard (EN13432), which requires more than 90% of the plastic mass to convert into biomass, CO2 and water, with no harmful residue.
