Cromwell asks, are you Simpler Recycling reform ready?

Cromwell saw the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), first introduce the idea of ‘Simpler Recycling’ several years ago, originally called ‘Consistency of Collections’. By 31 March 2025, many businesses will be required to comply with the newly implemented waste segregation.

What is Simpler Recycling?

With the aim of improving recycling rates and waste management success in the UK, the governing body DEFRA has been working for many years to simplify the rules, making recycling easier. From this, the Simpler Recycling reforms were born – and plans for changes in current ways of waste management workings have been developed.

As stated on the gov.uk website, ‘Simpler Recycling will enable consistent, more streamlined collections from all households, businesses and relevant non-domestic premises (such as schools and hospitals)’. Simpler Recycling sets out to make it clear what waste goes into which bin, helping residents and businesses have a better understanding of what can / cannot be recycled. Importantly, this will become consistent nationwide, so the same set of materials are collected.

The government will deliver these reforms from the 31st of March over the next 3 years. These include the new implementation of separate collections, as well as film collection in 2027 and recycling options. The first of these three is being implemented this year, 2025 – as business waste management becomes more clear.

Food Waste Collection

By 31 March 2025, businesses and relevant non-domestic premises in England will need to arrange for the collection of the core recyclable waste streams, (glass, metal, plastic, paper and card, and food waste), with the exception of garden waste. Whilst most businesses are proactive and separate their recycling into the appropriate waste streams already, this will now become a mandatory requirement for all. This will extend to include household collections from 31 March 2026 and businesses with less 10 staff from 31st March 2027. Collectors may however use the TEEP assessment to determine if separate food waste collection is practicable in their specific circumstances.

Can Cromwell be of any assistance?

With the new reforms upcoming for implementation, we can offer a range of waste liners to help with the capture and containment of your different recycling and waste streams. This includes the dry mixed recycling, glass, general waste and new food waste collections. Many of our customers opt for a compostable liner to collect their organic food waste – whether this is in a caddy or wheelie bin, we have the bags to accommodate all bin literages.

So whether you need waste sacks to enclose your recycling or food waste, Cromwell has a range of options. We can also help provide no-obligation advice to both customers and for new enquiries. Have a chat with our team to discuss your Simpler Recycling requirements, and be ready for the implementation on March 31st.
