Schools out for Summer, and the kids need entertaining, which isn’t always an easy fete. But what if you could entertain the kids and teach them a thing or two about smart waste management? This summer, our “Less Waste, More Value” campaign encourages just that—practical activities that show children how to handle waste responsibly, using simple materials you already have at home.
Upcycling: Big Ideas from Small Rubbish
Before you send those tin cans or milk bottles out for recycling, put them to better use. Tins can become painted planters for herbs. Bottles turn into colourful bird feeders. Got an old bucket or mug? Perfect for a DIY bug hotel.
These projects delay disposal, repurpose items already in circulation, and show the next generation that waste isn’t just what you throw away—it’s what you overlook.

Litter Picks: A Walk with a Purpose
Turn your daily stroll into a hands-on clean-up mission. Kit the kids out with a litter picker, Cromwell’s durable refuse sacks and bags, and a pair of Glovelee® compostable gloves—perfect for little hands and big clean-ups. These gloves provide hygienic, single-use protection and can be composted afterwards, reinforcing the lesson of responsible disposal.
Make it a game: who can collect the most rubbish, or find the strangest item? The result? A tidier community, engaged children, and a practical introduction to effective waste management.

Yard Sale: Shift the Clutter, Share the Value
While the kids are at home from school, what better time to have a clear out – getting rid of any old toys, games, or clothes that are no longer needed. The same can be done for adults alike, and following this, instead of sending them to landfill – why not recycle them via the means of a second hand buying sale.
Set up a stall in your front garden or at the top of the drive and sell, swap, or even donate your unwanted goods to other people. Games and toys that your kids have outgrown might make another child’s day, and clothing and garments that are no longer your size or style can make a significant difference for another family in need of a new wardrobe. This is great for school uniforms, which many parents often struggle to afford. A yard sale is a great way to help reduce waste and promote re-use and recycling, but it could also be a great pocket money earner for the kids too.

Poster-Making: Big Messages from Little Hands
Let children design posters that encourage better habits, like using the correct bins, picking up after pets, or keeping parks tidy. Laminate and display them (with permission) around your neighbourhood. When these messages come from kids, people pay attention.
It’s communication with a conscience, and it builds confidence too.

Final Thought: Value Beyond the Bin
