Each year, on June 7th, Cromwell, like millions across the globe come together in support of World Environment Day – an annual day of awareness that promotes the importance of coming together and working to protect our planet. It’s a global event that encourages people everywhere—at home, at work, in schools, and in communities—to take action for the environment, whether it’s picking up litter, planting trees, using vehicles less or just being more mindful of your waste. World Environment Day is a chance for all of us to do our bit for a cleaner, greener and more resourceful planet.
If you want to support World Environment Day, whether it is as an individual, within the workplace, as a school or even a group or charity, here are a few easy steps towards environmental support success.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is a simple but powerful way we can all help cut down on waste and look after the planet. It is a great campaign that lines perfectly with World Environment Day, and each of the ‘3 R’s’ inspires their own projects. Starting with reducing, we can all take steps to reduce our waste consumption by only using or buying what we need. By shopping, cooking, or making smarter and using only what is required, less waste will be produced. Following this, we can look at ways to reuse and help give any unwanted or unneeded items a new lease of life. This could be by finding a new purpose for something, e.g. re-using plastic bottles and bags, or even creating something new entirely, like turning old tyres into a ‘Bug Hotel’ – a project we at Cromwell have recently done ourselves. And finally, recycling—ensuring that all recyclable items, such as paper, plastic, and cans, are placed in the correct bin so they can be transformed into something new. Items such as clothing or furniture should be taken to the charity shop to be rehomed. It’s all about making smarter choices every day to waste less and protect the environment for the future.

Participate in Local Clean-Ups
One of the simplest yet most powerful ways to support World Environment Day is by organising or joining a local clean-up. Whether you’re acting as an individual, a business, or part of a group, a litter pick requires minimal effort but delivers a significant positive impact on the environment. All it takes is a waste sack, a litter picker, and a location in need of attention—and you’re ready to go. Enjoy time outdoors while helping to restore the natural beauty of your local streets, countryside, parks, or beaches by removing discarded litter and waste. Encourage colleagues, community members, friends, and family to get involved. The more people who participate, the greater the area you can cover and the more waste you can remove in a shorter time. At Cromwell, we’re here to support your efforts with our high-quality range of litter-picking sacks and waste liners. Together, we can help keep our local areas not only cleaner and more attractive, but also safer for wildlife and better for the environment.

Plant trees and flowers
As part of our ongoing environmental commitment, we’re excited to be planting a bush perimeter around our building. This new greenery will help form a natural boundary that’s both visually appealing and ecologically beneficial. Trees not only absorb CO2, but they also release oxygen into the air, allowing for a cleaner breathing space for us all. They also help to cool the air, reduce noise, and even soak up rainwater, which can prevent flooding. Flowers and other plants support wildlife by attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators that are essential for growing food and keeping nature in balance. On top of all that, green spaces can boost our mood and make places feel more peaceful. So whether it’s a tree in your garden or a wildflower patch in a local park, planting really does make a difference.

Be more energy efficient
Another simple yet effective way to make a positive impact on the planet is to be more mindful of our energy consumption. The average household in the UK uses around 7.4 kWh of electricity daily, according to Ofgem. Excessive energy use—especially when powered by fossil fuels—releases greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and climate change At Cromwell, we’re committed to reducing our environmental footprint, not just through messaging but through action. That’s why our distribution centre is equipped with sensory-based lighting that only activates when needed, reducing unnecessary energy consumption. Additionally, we utilise energy-efficient heating systems, which are supported by solar panels—maximising renewable energy use and cutting down on carbon emissions. These innovations allow us to run our operations more sustainably while maintaining efficiency. They also serve as a reminder that every workplace can contribute to positive environmental change through smarter infrastructure choices. At home, there are also easy steps you can take: switch off unused devices at the socket, reduce washing machine temperature and cycle times, and opt for air-drying clothes. Even turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or taking shorter showers can make a significant impact when multiplied across millions of households. Small actions, whether at home or at work, really do add up.

Promote better habits
Doing these things alone is fantastic, but encouraging others to join would make an even greater impact! Promote your changes and the impacts they are having to help educate others and promote better habits whether this is through education at schools and groups, through social media content or even just word of mouth. The hope is that if people see the difference your actions have made, whether it is a litter pick or planting a few trees, others will see the impact and join the cause.
You can always ask our team advice on how you can be more sustainable, we are always happy to help.
