Wellbeing Walks With a Purpose

Cromwell’s support for staff goes beyond the workplace, with wellbeing a priority and physical health a key part of that. That is exactly why Cromwell launched the 50 Mile Challenge, a monthly initiative designed to get our team moving, outdoors, and energised.

A healthier Cromwell team, one mile at a time

Try walking more this Spring to help improve you health & that of the planet

Each month, we encourage our team to walk, jog or run 50 miles. Nothing extreme, just doing the daily dog walk, or an easy saunter to the shops. The main focus is to help encourage regular exercise, spread across the month. Each Cromwell employee who hits the target has their name entered into a draw to win a voucher.

At its core, the 50 Mile Challenge is about supporting our people, getting them away from screens, phones, and other stresses, and getting them some fresh air and exercise. As a whole, this initiative offers a simple counterbalance and an easy way to support mental and physical health. By encouraging regular movement, we help staff improve cardiovascular health, boost energy levels, and reduce the physical strain associated with sedentary routines.

Fresh air, a change of scenery, and a bit of distance from the desk can do wonders for focus, mood, and overall well-being. Some of our team have even begun doing the challenge together, heading out for a lunchtime walk or run, strengthening the bond between our team members!

A touch of competition

Of course, it would not be quite as engaging without a little rivalry.

The monthly prize draw adds just enough motivation to keep things interesting. It turns a personal goal into a shared experience. Colleagues compare progress, swap routes, and encourage each other to keep going. It builds connection in a way that feels natural rather than forced.

This is where wellbeing meets workplace culture; through simple, shared challenges that people genuinely enjoy taking part in.

Take it one step further, bring a litter picker

Why not take it one step further and think of the health of the planet?

Taking a litter picker along turns a simple walk into a small act of environmental care. It is a practical way to improve the spaces we all share, whether that is a local park, a roadside verge, or a quiet footpath. A few items collected on each walk can quickly add up, preventing waste from entering waterways, harming wildlife, or simply spoiling the landscape.

It also reinforces a mindset. When you actively remove litter, you become more aware of waste, how it is managed, and how easily it can end up in the wrong place.

The combined impact

Put it all together, and the benefits stack up rather nicely.

Walking supports physical health, improves mental clarity, and helps build routine. Litter picking enhances the environment, reduces pollution, and encourages responsible behaviour. Combine the two, and you have an activity that benefits both people and planet in equal measure.

The Cromwell 50 Mile Challenge is a simple initiative, but it reflects something bigger. A belief that small, consistent actions can deliver real results. For our staff, for our communities, and for the environment we all depend on.

So the next time you head out for a walk, consider this. You are not just clocking up miles. You are investing in your health, supporting your wellbeing, and, with a litter picker in hand, leaving the world a little better than you found it.
