Nights are getting lighter, days are getting longer, and the weather is (arguably) improving, which all means that Spring is just around the corner. Following closely behind will be the GB Spring Clean, the UK’s largest Litter Pick. The campaign is the brain-child of environmental charity ‘Keep Britain Tidy’, who have clear campaigns to help cut litter, end waste, improve the health of our planet and educate future generations. One of their annual campaigns is the GB Spring Clean, now in it’s 11th year it has grown to also accommodate it’s sister campaign the ‘Great Big School Clean 2025’ – both of which aim to highlight and help tackle the growing issue around litter and pollution in the UK.

When it comes to the GB Spring Clean, one thing you can count on is the support from the team at Cromwell. Litter picking aligns perfectly with Cromwell Polythene’s vision of making the world cleaner, greener, and more resourceful by promoting responsible waste disposal and good waste management practices. This year, the GB Spring Clean runs from the 21st of March to the 6th of April; during this time, we plan to carry out clean-ups with not only the Cromwell team but the wider local community as well. We are very proud to sponsor a number of local sporting groups and collaborate with them to clean up their sporting grounds, leaving a clean tidy space to train and play, and what better time to do this than during the GB Spring Clean?

The impact & how it helps
All litter picks, regardless of their size or duration, will have a big impact on the environment and community and will also have excellent social and economic benefits. When discussing the GB Spring Clean and the benefits of carrying out litter picks, we first and foremost consider the environmental benefits. These include the reduction in litter which can contaminate soil, waterways, and oceans, harming wildlife and ecosystems. Litter picks are also helping to prevent toxic soil and water contamination and helping to protect wildlife and their habitats. However, carrying out litter-picking activities can have impacts beyond the environment, one of which is social and community benefits.
Cleaner environments are visually appealing, they help when promoting community pride and encourage residents to maintain a litter-free area. Seeing litter picks being carried out often also restores good habits by the general public, it not only decreases the chance of repeat offences but might even inspire others to carry out a litter pick of their own. Visible community clean-up efforts inspire others to adopt better waste disposal habits and discourage littering. It can also help to educate participants and the community about the impacts of littering and the importance of waste management. Finally, it helps reduce financial constraints – whether this is employing people or machinery to deal with the littered waste, or having to foot the bill for the negative impacts that litter has caused, for example, fixing clogged waterways.
