Cromwell lends a Hand (and Glove) to Pontefract Community Kitchen

Recently, Cromwell donated Glovelee® compostable gloves alongside a variety of donated food to Pontefract Community Kitchen in West Yorkshire, helping its volunteers with everyday food handling, preparation and serving.

Supporting the Local Community

Pontefract Community Kitchen is a volunteer led charity supporting homeless and vulnerable people, as well as individuals and families struggling on low incomes or benefits across Pontefract and the surrounding area, whether it is for food or even just shelter and a place to keep warm.

The kitchen provides weekly hot meals and drinks, alongside food bank support and emergency food parcels. The initiative has been helping its community for many years and gained charitable status in 2019. After operating from various local spaces and cafés, it now has a permanent home at Horsefair House. Today, the kitchen supports around 380 people each week. This scales up to helping over 19,000 individuals and families annually through hot meals, breakfasts, and emergency food parcels, which get collected or even delivered to hundreds of families in their local area.

That takes a considerable amount of food, organisation and, most importantly, volunteer time. After hearing about the Community Kitchen from many staff members who live in Pontefract, we wanted to try find a way we could support this brilliant charity, and give them a helping hand, and in this case… a Compostable Glove too.

Practical Support for Food Preparation

Glovelee compostable gloves are designed for foodservice and catering applications, making them a useful addition to the Community Kitchen’s supplies.

The gloves are food grade compliant, latex free, powder free and BPA free, with the gloves compliant with the EN13432 composting standard. They are ideal for the kitchen team, who prep and serve 100s of meals each week – but are also great for the volunteers preparing the food parcels too.

While restaurants and commercial kitchens might be the obvious home for catering gloves, places such as community kitchens demonstrate just how varied foodservice can be – and the many different industries that Glovelee can be used within, it really is a universally adaptable glove!

Every day, volunteers across the country prepare meals, organise food donations and provide vital support to their communities. Having the right everyday supplies helps them get on with that work and the compostable gloves will be an invaluable tool to ensure the safety and hygiene in this busy soup kitchen.

Food Bank Collection

Cromwell donated Glovelee® compostable gloves to help support good hygiene during food handling, preparation and serving, but we wanted to do a bit extra, and support the people who use the kitchen too. Our team also organised a food bank collection, with staff generously donating food and essential items to help the community kitchen provide much needed food parcels to people in need.

We hope these donations will make a practical difference to both the people who rely on the services and the volunteers who give their time to support them. The donated food will help replenish supplies for those who need them, while the Glovelee® gloves will provide volunteers with a practical option when preparing, handling and serving food.

It is a simple way for us to support those who spend so much of their time supporting others.
